Where will LeBron James Play Next Season?

Summary

Following the Lakers’ acquisition of Luka Doncic and the likely end of LeBron James’ tenure in Los Angeles, speculation centers on where he might play next if he continues his career. The most probable destination appears to be a storybook return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, offering a low-pressure retirement tour with a competitive roster. Other potential teams include the Golden State Warriors for a final run with Stephen Curry, the New York Knicks, or longer-shot options like the Denver Nuggets and Philadelphia 76ers.

LeBron is heavily favored to continue playing, seeking a marketed retirement tour, and there is a strong possibility he will insist on being on the same team as his son, Bronny. However, odds suggest Bronny’s own NBA future is tenuous and largely dependent on his father’s involvement, with a significant chance he would not remain in the league otherwise. LeBron’s enduring elite performance and motivation for a final chase make a return for at least one more season highly likely.

When the Los Angeles Lakers traded for Luka Doncic in February 2025, it signaled the start of the end of the LeBron James era in Tinseltown. With the franchise planning to retool this offseason with significant cap space, it’s highly unlikely LeBron returns.  If the 41-year old plans to continue playing, where will he sign?  What does it mean for Bronny James? Will he follow his father to a new city? Let’s break down where LeBron James could end up in 2026-27, if he doesn’t retire, and whether his son join him.    BetOnline.ag has four props available when it comes to the future of the James family.

LeBron James 2026-27 NBA Team

Cleveland Cavaliers (+150)

It would be a storybook end for the ages if LeBron James returned home and to the team that drafted him as a teenager.  If he went back to the Cavaliers, there wouldn’t be pressure for him to lead the team, as the club already has a solid core.  James has wanted a retirement tour, and it would make sense to do it at home, with his original team, in front of family and friends. And more importantly, with Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and James Harden, LeBron would have a chance at one more ring before calling it a career.

Golden State Warriors (+300)

Could Stephen Curry convince James to come to the Bay Area for one more epic season?    Curry, 37, has hinted at retirement recently and what would be more incredible than watching two of the greatest players play their final seasons together, chasing one last championship?

New York Knicks (+400)

Another high-end roster that LeBron could help take to the next level.  The Knicks haven’t won a title in more than 50 years. A final season with James could be the one that takes them to the top.  No matter where he plays, the media spotlight would be immense and follow him for the entire season, so playing in NYC wouldn’t add extra pressure.

Denver Nuggets (+600)

While pairing up with Nikola Jokić could be exciting for fans, it’s a concept that is highly unlikely.  Aside from Cleveland, it would be a stretch for James to play for a ‘smaller market’ team despite winning a title recently.

Philadelphia 76ers (+800)

There have been rumors in the past that the 76ers would target James but the move never happened.  Philadelphia would have to clear some cap space to sign LeBron and he could help Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey get to that next level. Still another long shot, and very unlikely.

Miami Heat (+1000)

Been there, done that.  Can’t see LeBron returning to Miami after leading them to multiple championships.

Will LeBron James retire?

Yes       +400

No         -700

Barring something unforeseen, LeBron James wants a retirement tour.  It’s something the NBA would market and make part of their broadcast schedule.  LeBron could be featured on Opening Night, Christmas Day, and likely stand-alone games throughout the season.  These odds imply 87% chance he keeps playing, which really is easy money.

Will LeBron and Bronny James be on the same team next season?

Yes       +150

No         -110

Let’s be honest, Bronny James is only in the NBA because of his dad.  Many feel he’s barely good enough to play in the D-League.  If 2026/27 is LeBron’s curtain call, why wouldn’t he want to do it with his son?  It wouldn’t be a shock for a team to sign both players if that’s what LeBron wants as part of his potential final season deal.

If LeBron retires or Bronny and him aren’t on the same team, will Bronny James be in the league?

Yes       +250

No         -400

Another market here that clearly shows the chances of Bronny not being in the NBA if his dad isn’t around.  The ‘No’ market is the favorite, and rightfully so.  As mentioned above, many observers believe Bronny just isn’t NBA caliber and when his dad isn’t around, he likely has to move on from the league.  Expect this price to get lower within the next year.

Final Thoughts

LeBron James will likely play at least one more season because he’s still producing at an elite level and hasn’t shown signs of slowing down mentally or physically.   His game has evolved even at the age of 41.  He clearly loves the spotlight and the chase, whether it’s another playoff run, more records, or proving doubters wrong again.   And the idea of playing with his son remains a major motivator. While he isn’t ready to walk away just yet, he’s a slam dunk to return for at least another season, maybe even two.
