Cognizant Classic Golf Odds And 2026 PGA Preview, Picks And Props

Following triple-digit longshot Jacob Bridgeman’s first PGA Tour win at The Genesis Invitational Signature Event, the West Coast swing is complete and the Tour moves to Florida for the 2025 Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. The former Honda event is in a poor scheduling spot again, thus fewer top players competing. It got worse Monday when two top 20 players withdrew in Ben Griffin and Bridgeman, along with Masters winner and top 50 Adam Scott. That leaves just two of the top 30 players in the world golf rankings (OWGR) playing in Shane Lowry and Ryan Gerard, who live in nearby Jupiter with the Palm Beach Gardens just 80 miles up the coast from Miami and within 7 miles of the Atlantic East Coast. .  

The field has been reduced to just 123 players for the $9.6 million event, down more than 20 players from last year. Notable names Brooks Koepka, Billy Horschel, Will Zalatoris, Max Homa and Aaron Rai lead the field along with past winners of the event in Keith Mitchell, Austin Eckroat, Chris Kirk, Matt Kuchar and Camilo Villegas.

The Course And Stats

The PGA National Champion Course is a Par 71 that plays to 7,223 yards for the PGA Tour pros. That’s a change this year from the previous Par 70, as the 10th hole was lengthened by 20 yards and now plays as a more scoreable 528-yard par-5. Bermuda grass is back in play in the oversized greens (ave. 7,000 sq. ft) with Perennial rye grass fairways and 3-inch rough – slightly higher than last year’s event won by another longshot Joe Highsmith (-19). His 2-stroke victory over last year’s breakout major champion J.J. Spaun and this year’s early rising star Jacob Bridgman included a final round of 64.  

Hitting narrower fairways are part of the challenge along with 26 individual water hazards and water in play on 15 holes. PGA National has had a cut line above par in the last 10 years, and all 15 holes other than the Par 5’s have had a scoring average of even par or worse over the past 10 years. Tom and George Fazio designed the course in 1981, and Jack Nicklaus’ most recent redesign of the course was in 2014 with the greens modified in 2019. The back nine of The Champion Course includes the famous Bear Trap , a par 3, 4, 3 set of holes on 15-17 with water that rank among the top 5 toughest three-hole stretches for scoring on the PGA Tour.   

Key Strokes Gained stats again include Approach, especially from 125-200 yards, along with Total Driving with more listed below. Players who consistently hit fairways off the tee will have a clear edge, as the tricky South Florida winds can constantly cause havoc with players navigating the tighter landing areas off the tee and hitting more pressure shots over seemingly tranquil water penalty areas throughout the course, including at The Bear Trap. Players have hit Greens in Regulation at the course near a 61% rate since 2019 – which is about 5% below the Tour average. But the ryegrass overseed that started here last year aided the easier scoring conditions, as overseed adds an agronomical process that essentially adds a thin layer of grass, which softens fairways and makes playing from the rough easier, especially around the greens.

Shane Lowry has seven consecutive Top 25 finishes dating back to last year, and his course form is best in this field with four top 11 finishes in this event the past four years including three top 5’s and only one round over par. Lowry’s stronger long iron play and ability to flight the ball through windier conditions has always been a strength which shines through at this event. Over his last eight events, Lowry leads this field in SG: Approach and Tee-to-Green and top 10 with Gerard in both SG: Off-the-Tee and top 5 SG: Total. Lowery is a First Round Leader option (+2500) on Thursday with an early morning tee-time and lighter winds until 12 p.m. The 38-year-old Irishman resides in nearby Jupiter, and he shot his lowest round of the event last year on Thursday (66). 

Ryan Gerard is playing his best to start 2026 following a breakout season last year when he won his first PGA Tour title and had eight top 10 finishes. The 26-year-old also lives in nearby Jupiter, and he finished 4th on debut here in 2023 shooting 63 on Friday, and T25 last year in the Cognizant Classic. Few are playing better to start 2026 as Gerard posted a pair of runner-up finishes including over a similar overseed course at The Genesis Invitational, along with another top 11 finish. A superb Ball Striker, Gerard ranks top 10 in Strokes Gained Approach and Proximity to the hole from 150-200 over the first two months of the new season.  

Max McGreevy offers plenty of upside on a course he finished T4 last year when he posted four rounds under 70 including a 64 on Saturday. He also finished top 3 in a pair of events last Fall featuring Bermuda greens. The 30-year-old Oklahoma Sooner golfer posted three top 30 finishes this year until missing the cut last week on Poa annua greens at The Genesis Invitational. His best scoring was at The American Express, where the course had similar overseed and offered easier scoring conditions. McGreevy’s 2026 stats show strength that can improve this week with Top 15 ranking in Strokes Gained: Total, Tee-to-Green, Off-the-Tee and Ball Striking.  

Johnny Keefer is among the top young talents emerging on Tour. Keefer makes his 11th start on the PGA Tour following his standout performances on the Korn Ferry Tour. A superb Ball Striker, the 25-year-old played college in Texas at Baylor, and handles the wind. He’s top 10 in this field in Ball Striking, Approach, Off the Tee and tops in Greens in Regulation.     

Max Meissner fits a profile of less than 10 golfers in this field that rank above average in these stat categories: Strokes Gained: Approach, Ball Striking, Scrambling, Putting (Bermuda) and Bogey Avoidance. His comp course history and stats suggest a solid week, even though the 27-year-old missed the cut here last year following poor early season results. Meissner enters off a top 20 finish at the Phoenix Open – his fourth straight made cut this year. 

David Ford makes his 20th start on the PGA Tour this week, and the 23-year-old could be yet another young talent to emerge among the leaders and win. As a teenager in 2020, Ford shot 65-68 over a then shorter Champions Course to win the Rolex Tournament of Champions. He’s also won over the TPC Sawgrass course with precise iron play, capturing the Junior Players Championship. Ford finished T13 at the similar overseed course this year at The American Express. Since finishing 3rd in Utah last fall on Tour, Ford has gained strokes on Approach in all his PGA Tour events with some top 10 approach play across some tougher courses this year. 

Kevin Roy is an intriguing big longshot, and the 35-year-old Florida resident fares better on Bermuda and mid to long-range iron approaches. He finished T23 on his Cognizant event debut in 2023, and has a pair of top 15 finishes this year at The Sony Open and Phoenix Open. 

The 37-year-old Andrew Putnam is approaching 250 starts on the PGA Tour, and just one win. He finished T11 in this event last year, and T2 at The American Express this year at PGA West with elite Ball Striking and top 5 stats in Driving Accuracy and Greens in Regulation.
