BEST BROKEN RECORD BETS FOR SUPER BOWL LX

Summary

Super Bowls were often one-sided blowouts until 1997, but the last 15 have mostly featured close games decided by a single score. The upcoming Super Bowl LX between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots could see several long-standing individual records challenged.

Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njiba could threaten Jerry Rice’s 215 receiving yards record, while kickers from both teams have the leg strength to break the 57-yard field goal mark. Additionally, Patriots running back TreVeyon Henderson might challenge the record of 14 catches, and Seattle’s Kenneth Walker III has the breakaway ability to surpass the 205-yard rushing record.

Up until the 1997 NFL season, the Super Bowl was kind of dull. If you didn’t want to see the NFC team blow out the AFC team by three or more touchdowns, you pretty much had to watch something else. Frankly, the Annual Bud Bowl, where Budweiser faced off against its archrival Bud Light, brought more suspense.

Since that 1997-98 Denver Broncos 31-24 victory over the favored Green Bay Packers, 15 Super Bowls have been decided by a single score. So that’s all changed.

We’ve not seen many records fall in that span. Here are my picks for the all-time marks most likely to fall in Super Bowl LX.

SUPER BOWL LX

SEATTLE SEAHAWKS VS NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (+5, O/U: 45.5)

Date: Sunday, Feb. 8, 2025

Location: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, Calif.

Broadcast: NBC/Peacock

WILL JERRY RICE’S SUPER BOWL RECORD OF 215 RECEIVING YARDS BE BROKEN?

Yes +2500

While the Patriots’ offense isn’t that prolific, Seattle’s O-unit goes right through Jaxon Smith-Njiba. Two weeks ago, against the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Championship, JSN caught 10 passes for 153 yards. Njiba led the NFL in receiving yards this season with 1,793. If the man breaks a couple of big catches, and if the game is close at all, this record could be on the ropes.

WILL HARRISON BUTKER’S SUPER BOWL FIELD GOAL RECORD OF 57 YARDS BE BROKEN?

Yes +5000

I feel like anyone has to put a few dollars on this record to be broken based on what happened with field goal kickers this season alone. Seattle kicker Jason Myers boasts a career-long of 61 yards. Pats kicker Andres Borregales kicked a 59-yarder in Week 18 against the Miami Dolphins. The only thing keeping this record intact is if both teams routinely go for it on fourth down. And, in the Super Bowl, I’m not sure they will. Especially late in the second quarter. You don’t pass up on points in the Super Bowl.

WILL JAMES WHITE’S SUPER BOWL RECORD OF 14 CATCHES BE BROKEN

Yes +3300

Yep. New England running back James White holds the single-game Super Bowl record, set in Super Bowl LI in their comeback victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Guess who was calling that game for the Pats? Josh McDaniels, the same guy running the offensive show this time. If the Patriots have a shot here, they have to control the ball, grind out yards, and do it against one of the best defenses in football. That means check downs, and McDaniels lived off them with Tom Brady at quarterback. Don’t be surprised to see TreVeyon Henderson flirt with this one if New England makes a game of it.

WILL TIMMY SMITH’S SUPER BOWL RUSHING RECORD OF 205 YARDS BE BROKEN?

Yes +6600

Lastly, this all comes down to Kenneth Walker III. The kid is a home run threat every time he touches the ball. If Seattle starts hitting JSN and Cooper Kupp in the passing game, the Patriots’ defense will be dying to set him free when he gets past the line of scrimmage. It would take a couple of huge runs for Walker to get this one, but he has longs of 55, 31, 25, 24, 24, 21, 20, and 20 this season. In fact, in 12 of the 19 games Walker III played in this season, he hit runs of 15-plus yards. And that was splitting time with Zach Charbonnet for most of the time. With Charbonnet hurt, Walker will be the only serious running threat for Seattle in this game.
