Looking for value when betting is a solid strategy in horse racing, and especially with larger fields at the Breeders’ Cup. However, favorites and leading contenders can still pay off well with the larger fields. In the 2024 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, five of the 14 favorites won for a 35.7% strike rate. Two other favorites finished second and three finished third. That’s 10 of 14 favorites in the top 3 for an on-the-board strike rate of 71.4%.

All Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup races are separated by approximately 40 minutes. The first Breeders’ Cup race on Sat., Nov. 1 is at 12 pm local Pacific Time, 3pm Eastern.

Race 4 – Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

  • Kopion
  • Sweet Azteca
  • Hope Road
  • R Disaster
  • Vahva

Jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. has won four of the last eight editions of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint including back-to-back winners in 2022 and 2023 riding Goodnight Olive for trainer Chad Brown.

Race 5 – Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint

  • Ag Bullet
  • Motorious
  • Arizona Blaze
  • Reef Runner
  • Big Mojo

Race 6 – Breeders’ Cup Sprint

  • Bentornado
  • Imagination
  • Straight No Chaser
  • Lovesick Blues
  • Kopion (if he doesn’t enter Race 4)

Trends: Straight No Chaser won last year’s BC Sprint at 6/1 odds. The average winning odds for the Sprint over the last 26 years is 8.1/1 with six post-time race favorites winning. Horses that started at 4/1 odds or less have won 12 of the last 26 BC Sprint races. Seventeen of the last 26 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winners won their final prep race, and 22 finished either first or second in their last pre-Breeders’ Cup start.

Race 7 – Breeders’ Cup Distaff

  • Seismic Beauty
  • Nitrogen
  • Dorth Vader
  • Clicquot
  • Sarawak Rim

Race 8 – Breeders’ Cup Turf

  • Rebel’s Romance
  • Ombudsman
  • Gold Phoenix
  • El Cordobes
  • Rebel Red

Trends: Rebel’s Romance has won an amazing 20 races in 29 starts including 5-of-7 this year after winning the BC Turf in 2024 at 2/1 odds. He was the fourth favorite in the last seven years to win the Breeders’ Cup Turf. Horses based outside of North America have long dominated the Breeders’ Cup Turf with 21 of the last 27 based overseas. When analyzing the pace for the race, know that 13 of the last 16 editions of the Breeders’ Cup Turf (and 11 of the last 12) have been won by horses racing between fifth place and 13th place after the opening half-mile.

Race 9 – Breeders’ Cup Classic

  • Sovereignty
  • Fierceness
  • Sierra Leone
  • Forever Young
  • Journalism
  • Mindframe
  • Baeza

Jockey’s Flavien Prat (2024, 2022) and Joel Rosario (2021, 2018) have each won two BC Classic’s in the past 10 editions. John Velazquez (2020) rode Authentic (1:59.19) to the fastest winning time in the 1 ¼ mile Classic – less than one second faster than Breeders’ Cup Classic winners Knicks Go (2021), American Pharoah (2015) and Arrogate (2016).

Race 10 – Breeders’ Cup Mile

  • Johannes
  • Notable Speech
  • Simply in Front
  • Formidable Man
  • Qirat
  • Never So Brave

Trends: Pace setters are up against history in the BC Mile. None of the last 26 winners was in first after the opening quarter-mile or the first half-mile in the race. Last year’s winner at 7/1 odds was 9th after the opening half-mile. For many Breeders’ Cup races, recent form is unequivocally the most important criteria in determining the winner. For the Mile, established back class is more important than recent form. Only seven of the last 21 Breeders’ Cup Mile winners prevailed in their final prep race and only 12 of the 26 winners from 1999 to 2024 entered the race off of a win. The average winning payoff in the BC Mile over the last 26 years is 12/1.

Race 11 – Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile

  • Full Serrano
  • Nysos
  • Mystik Dan
  • White Abarrio
  • Citizen Bull

Race 12 – Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf

  • She Feels Pretty
  • Gezora
  • Cinderella’s Dream
  • Diamond Rain
  • See The Fire

In addition, Friday’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile will provide a glimpse of potential runners and contenders for the 2026 Kentucky Derby. The leading win contenders in the BC Juvenile include:

  • Ted Noffey
  • Brandt
  • Blackout Time
  • Intrepido
  • Plutrach

However, only two winners in the history of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile have won the Kentucky Derby the following year: Street Sense in 2006 and Nyquist in 2015.

Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup is a spectacular and special day of racing headlined by the $7 million Classic. This year’s BC Classic is a most anticipated international showdown featuring last year’s top-3 finishers – Sierra Leone, Fierceness and Japanese star Forever Young. They will battle again alongside 2025 Kentucky Derby, Belmont Stakes and Travers Stakes winner Sovereignty and Preakness Stakes and Haskell Stakes winner Journalism

NBC Sports will produce more than 10 hours of racing coverage, airing live across the two-day festival on NBC, USA Network, and Peacock, which is NBCUniversal’s streaming service. In addition, live continuous coverage of every championship and undercard race through the Breeders’ Cup Players’ Show is available on BreedersCup.com and the official Breeders’ Cup mobile app. The 2025 World Championships will also be broadcast to more than 180 countries around the world allowing fans globally to see that the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar is Cool As Ever.
