Farmers Insurance Open Golf Odds And 2026 PGA Preview, Picks And Props

Summary

The PGA Tour heads to Torrey Pines in San Diego for the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open. World No. 6 Xander Schauffele is the favorite, leading a field that includes Max Homa and Ludvig Åberg but lacks the world’s top five players. The event features a $9.6 million purse and marks ESPN’s return to regular Tour coverage.

The challenging South Course demands long driving and precise long-iron play, with notoriously difficult Poa annua greens. Key contenders highlighted include Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Will Zalatoris, and Maverick McNealy, all of whom have strong course histories or recent form. Extensive betting markets, from outright winners to tournament matchups, are available for the event.

Following last week’s The American Express victory by betting favorite and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, the PGA Tour players head to Torrey Pines in La Jolla and the scenic coastal area in northern San Diego for the 2026 Farmers Insurance Open. The 147 player field includes 12 of the top 25 in the world golf rankings, but not any of the top 5 players in the OWGR – Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Russell Henley or Robert McIntyre.

San Diego native and world No. 6 Xander Schauffele headlines this week’s event as the betting favorite in his 2026 debut on Tour. Another California native Max Homa returns and he won this event in 2023 and currently ranks top 10 in the field in putting on Poa greens over the last five years. Also, Ludvig Aberg is one of the favorites, and he won at Torrey Pines last year when the Genesis Invitational was held on the South Course three weeks after the 2025 Farmers Insurance Open.

The Course

A hole-by-hole look at the Torrey Pines South Course, which has Poa Annua greens that average 5,000 square feet. Those were the fifth smallest greens on Tour last year (Tour ave. 6,000 sq ft). But the Par 72 course was the longest on Tour last year at 7,765 yards and plays long and difficult with narrow (24-27 yards) and softer fairways, cooler air and tougher to putt Poa greens.

Torrey Pines is the most difficult course on Tour to hit putts inside 15 feet, as the imperfections and distinctly bumpy surfaces result in more uneven and harder to read putts. There are 82 sand bunkers to navigate but water is in play on just one hole. Thick and healthy ryegrass fairways and rough (4’ inches) was aided by successful overseeding which is key with the public North and South courses drawing more than 80,000 rounds of golf per year. The Farmers Insurance Open will play one round over the Par 72 North Course, which plays to 7,258 yards with Tour average size greens.

Driving distance is elevated this week along with long iron strength and proximity from 200+ yards with about ⅓ of the approach shots from 200 or more yards on the South Course. A top-tier short game and putting on Poa will help golfers in tougher scoring conditions. There are seven Par 4’s that measure over 450 yards on the South Course, three par 3’s of 200+ yards and two par 5’s longer than 600 yards.

Five-time major champion Brooks Koepka returns to the PGA Tour this week from LIV, and he finished T4 at the 2021 U.S. Open held at Torrey Pines. The 2026 Farmers Insurance Open will also mark the first time in nearly 20 years that ESPN offers live coverage of a Tour event (non major). ESPN will also elevate the broadcast to Hulu and Disney+ with PGA golf fans and bettors able to elevate, engage and entertain themselves further with live/in-game betting at BetOnline.

While the big money purses of $20 million are ahead for the eight Signature Events on Tour this season, the Farmers field will shoot for $9.6 million this week with the winner earning $1.72 million, solo runner-up more than $1 million and a top 10 finish securing over $250,000.

Players with multiple top 15 finishes over the past five years include: Xander Schauffele, Max Homa, Jason Day, Tony Finau, Hideki Matsuyama, Keegan Bradely, Taylor Pendrith, Sam Stevens, Akshay Bhatia, Luke List and Beau Hossler.

Harris English (-8) won last year’s event, and since 2020 the other winning scores have ranged from -13 to -15 under par.

Farmers Insurance Open Picks And Stats

Players to target in outright win market and top 10 or 20 finish

  • Patrick Cantlay (+2200 and +275 top 10)
  • Maverick McNealy (+3500 and +325 top 10)
  • Wyndham Clark (+4000 and +500 top 10)
  • Taylor Pendrith (+4000 and +450 top 10)
  • Will Zalatoris (+4500 and +450 top 10)
  • Max Homa (+5500 and +550 top 10)
  • Other big longshots Nicolai Hojgaard (+5500), Alrich Potgieter (+10000), Austin Smotherman (+17500), Karl Vilips (+20000).

Wyndham Clark – A top 15 at last week’s American Express after falling back in the final round, and top 10 to finish 2025, the 2023 U.S. Open champion in Los Angeles is finding his groove again. The 32-yar-old former world No. 3 is currently No. 49, and his confidence is growing with a new coach, change of equipment and dialed in putter. He said last week his game is “starting to feel really good,” and his stats, profile and results fit well at Torrey Pines with Clark also one of the longest drivers on Tour (320+ yards ave). Clark has also won at coastal Pebble Beach, and sat top 10 at Torrey through 36 holes in last year’s Genesis before falling back. He’s 3-for-3 making the cut at The Farmers since 2021 and should improve on his best T37 finish.

Will Zalatoris turns 30 this summer, and it’s hard to believe the former world No. 7 player has fallen outside the top 200 in the OWGR. Still, his odds support the strength of his game, which includes a 54-hole lead here in 2022 when he missed a putt inside 10 feet on the 72nd hole and then lost in a playoff. Two other top 15 finishes in this event plus eight top 10’s in Majors show his talent and ability with his exceptional ball striking and iron play providing solid results at Torrey Pines. Improved putting in more recent events suggest he can contend again.

Max Homa – The 35-year-old California native is also on the rebound with four top-27 finishes in his last five stats. Another player who excels on classical courses, all four of his PGA Tour wins have come in CA on Poa Annua-based, including this Farmers event in 2023 plus two other top 15 finishes at Torrey Pines since 2020. Current form and strokes gained stat profiles support another solid week at Torrey Pines.

Patrick Cantlay is worthy of being at the top of the betting market, and the 33-year-old California native has excelled in his home state with eight top 5 finishes in his last 20 CA starts. Cantlay finished T5 in last year’s Genesis Invitational held at Torrey Pines with a strong weekend of play. Off a long layoff into last week’s American Express event, Cantlay finished top 15 and should show well again this week on familiar grounds.

Maverick McNearly finished runner-up in last year’s Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines despite an opening round 75. A field-best final round 64 left him 1-shot behind Ludvig Aberg, and he led the field in SG Putting and second in Approach. The 30-year-olds breakthrough season included seven top 10’s with strong finishes in most competitive Signature Events and FedExCup Playoffs. The former Stanford stud and world No. 1 amateur has the tools and game to contend again.

The pre-tournament prediction model at Data Golf has favorites Schauffele, Aberg, Young and Cantlay between 6.5% and 3.1% probability to win and 31.8% to 21.8% to finish top 10. Plenty of other capable contenders at longer odds can cash in on the tough Torrey Pines courses.

Bet on the Action

Golf continues to be one of the most popular sports to bet on. Beyond watching and wagering on the outright player to win a golf tournament, betting on golf provides other popular specific betting markets, especially during the four Major Championships and big Signature Events. Betting on a player’s finishing position (top 5, 10, 20), make or miss the cut, head-to-head tournament matchups, round leader and matchup markets and other prop bets allow bettors a golf bag full of options when wagering on golf. Bettors who strategize and are able to combine course fit with data-driven insights can more consistently outperform the market. A key strategy is to understand how each tournament or major championship tests different aspects of golf and match those demands with player skill sets.
