Top 5 SEC Teams And Odds In College Football Playoff Chase

Summary

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) continues to demonstrate its dominance in college football, with five of its teams ranked in the top eight of the latest playoff poll. The race for the conference championship remains tight, with Texas A&M, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi all in contention. The final weekend of games will be decisive, as no team has yet clinched a spot in the SEC title game. These top teams are also leading contenders for the expanded College Football Playoff, with Texas A&M and Georgia holding the best odds.

The conference’s strength and depth were on full display recently, highlighted by Oklahoma’s significant road victory over Alabama. Other notable performances include South Carolina’s near-upset of Texas A&M and Vanderbilt’s competitive season. This high level of play attracts massive television audiences, with several SEC games drawing over eight million viewers. The upcoming rivalry games and season finales are expected to generate even more watch-and-wager interest as the playoff picture clarifies.

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) continues to dominate the college football scene. When the third edition of the College Football Playoff rankings comes out on Tuesday, Nov. 19, five SEC teams will be ranked in the top 8 of the top 25 CFP poll. Let’s take a look at those teams and their records, remaining schedules, notable wins and stats plus odds to make it to the 12-team College Football Playoff and win the national championship.

No SEC team can clinch a spot in the conference championship game until Week 14 and the final weekend of games Nov. 28-29.

SEC Standings And Top Teams Odds To Win SEC Championship

All the teams below have at least 6 wins overall and are bowl eligible. Kentucky has 5 wins and needs one more with two road games remaining at Vanderbilt and Louisville. Mississippi State has 5 wins and one game remaining in their Egg Bowl rivalry at home vs. Ole Miss. Auburn will need to beat Alabama at home in the Iron Bowl to become bowl eligible. The two highest-scoring teams Tennessee (40.2 points per game) and Vanderbilt (37.6) won’t make the SEC title game or College Football Playoff. But Texas A&M (37.1) and Ole Miss (36.0) can score with Georgia and Alabama also averaging at least 31 points per game.

Top 5 SEC Teams Chasing SEC Title And College Football Playoff Championship

  1. Texas A&M (10-0): The Aggies remain undefeated after escaping College Station with a 31-30 win over South Carolina. Texas A&M trailed 30-3 at halftime as a 19-point home favorite. The Aggies should hold onto the No. 3 ranking behind the two other undefeated teams this season from the Big Ten, Ohio State and Indiana. Texas A&M plays non-conference Sam Houston and then their regular season finale as a short road favorite at Texas on Friday, Nov. 28 after Thanksgiving in one of the biggest rivalry games to close the 2025 regular season.
  2. Georgia (9-1): The Bulldogs only loss was at home to Alabama, 27-24. They have had four close contests in wins over Tennessee (OT) after the Vols kicker missed a game-winning field goal, Auburn, Florida and Ole Miss, who UGA trailed by 9 points in the fourth quarter. Georgia’s conference schedule is finished after they trounced Texas 35-10 to knock the Longhorns out of the SEC race and College Football Playoff. But the tiebreaker scenarios show that Georgia will need Alabama to lose to Auburn to make the SEC championship game or have A&M lose or Ole Miss to win with strength of schedule over Alabama to get in. Had South Carolina held on to beat Texas A&M, then Georgia would have secured a spot in the SEC Championship Game. Ugh. Georgia finishes the regular season versus Charlotte then at Georgia Tech in a state rivalry game.
  3. Mississippi (10-1): The Rebels are on their way to the College Football Playoff after rallying in the fourth quarter to overtake Florida 34-24 with another strong and balanced offensive performance of more than 500 yards. Mississippi’s only loss was to Georgia in a game they led by 9 points into the fourth quarter. The following week Ole Miss earned an impressive road win at Oklahoma. Ole Miss has a bye before their season finale and Egg Bowl rivalry at Mississippi State. It won’t be easy as MSU took both Tennessee and Texas to overtime before losing.
  4. Alabama (8-2): The Crimson Tide suffered their second loss of the season in Week 11 and first in SEC play, 23-21 to Oklahoma. Alabama out-gained Oklahoma 406-212 but suffered three turnovers in defeat. Now the ‘Tide needs a victory in the Iron Bowl at Auburn for a chance to reach the SEC title game and make the College Football Playoff. ESPN’s metrics still give Alabama an 83.9% chance to make the CFP with Georgia and Ole Miss 94-95%. Starting in late September, Alabama beat four straight ranked opponents – Georgia, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Tennessee.
  5. Oklahoma (8-2): The Sooners big win at Alabama keeps them alive for a College Football Playoff spot. A pair of losses to Texas and Ole Miss have been followed by impressive road wins in November at Tennessee and Alabama, becoming the first team in more than a decade to beat Alabama in back-to-back seasons. The Sooners top defense is allowing a league-low 16 points per game and 292 yards per game. Oklahoma concludes the regular season with home games against Missouri and LSU, and ESPN’s metrics give the Sooners a 49.2% chance to make the College Football Playoff.

SEC Football Strength, Depth And Ratings

Two top matchups were featured in Week 12 when No. 11 Oklahoma traveled to Tuscaloosa and beat No. 4 Alabama 23-21. But No. 10 Texas was unable to do the same traveling to Athens as No. 5 Georgia scored 21 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to end the Longhorns playoff hopes with a 35-10 victory while holding the Longhorns to 23 net rushing yards. Recall last season when Georgia swept Texas in both contests including in overtime in the SEC Championship Game while holding the Longhorns to 29 and 31 yards rushing in those two contests.

The strength and depth of the conference shined again in Week 12 with South Carolina (1-6) losing to first place Texas A&M 31-30 and blowing a 30-3 halftime lead as a 19-point underdog. Arkansas (0-6) has lost four SEC games by 3-points or less to LSU, A&M, Tennessee and Mississippi State plus a 6-point loss at Ole Miss. Vanderbilt’s rise the past two seasons and 8-wins this season included an AP Top 10 ranking for the first time in nearly a century. The Commodores first loss came at Alabama one year after pulling off the shocking upset over the Crimson Tide. The ‘Dores also lost at Texas by just 3-points and beat LSU this season and finish the regular season at rival Tennessee. Missouri’s stronger, balanced offense has tapered off since their 5-0 start and as the schedule toughened they suffered losses to Alabama, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. The Tigers running game led the way with 326 yards rushing to beat Mississippi State last Saturday, and they’ll need to be strong again with road games at Oklahoma and Arkansas to finish the season.

Florida and LSU will have new head coaches next season as the coaching carousel continues following in-season firings. Those two big brands and football program powerhouses still draw strong ratings and interest even in down seasons. The sports media ratings have seen SEC games top 6-7 million viewers in most recent Saturday games with LSU-Alabama, Florida-Georgia, Alabama-South Carolina, LSU-Texas A&M, Ole Miss-Oklahoma, and more than 8 million viewers for Tennessee-Alabama and Oklahoma-Texas. A season-high 9.7 million viewers watched Ole Miss-Georgia. Check the ratings early this week for Alabama-Oklahoma and Texas-Georgia results, and know there will be Texas-sized watch and wager action for upcoming SEC and rivalry games ahead of the conference championship games and College Football Playoff.
